AUSTIN — Today, Texas Governor Rick Perry signed into law a bill by Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. (D-Brownsville) intended to increase participation in the federal School Breakfast Program. Senate Bill 376 provides that all schools participating in the federal School Breakfast Program make available a free breakfast to each of their students, if 80 percent or more of those students qualify for free or reduced-price meals.
Senator Lucio releases the following statement:
"Senate Bill 376 will ensure that many more Texas students receive a healthy breakfast. Few resources are as important as a nutritious breakfast. It has been shown that providing access to nutritious food increases students' concentration, and reduces students' absences and discipline problems. We have an obligation to ensure that every Texas child has the resources they need to reach their full potential.
"This bill helps close the gap between a hungry child and a healthy child. I feel so honored to have carried this bill on behalf of these children. I’m so grateful to all of the stakeholder organizations for supporting the bill this Session, and for fighting with all their heart for the hungry children of Texas."
