AUSTIN — Today, Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. (D-Brownsville) recognized Texas Bowtie Day, an event to be held Friday to benefit families of children with autism and Down syndrome, with a resolution in the Texas Senate. At the Capitol today legislators and their staff wear bowties to commemorate the event. Texas Bowtie Day is a bipartisan event sponsored by Senator Lucio, Republican Commissioner of Education Michael Williams, and Texas Public Utility Commissioner Rolando Pablos.
"Not only does Texas Bowtie Day give us the opportunity to promote bipartisanship, it provides an avenue for which we can donate to a great cause," Senator Lucio said to his fellow senators on the Senate floor today.
On the evening of Saturday, April 13, Senator Lucio, Commissioner Williams, and Commissioner Pablos, along with Representatives Eddie Lucio III (D-Harlingen) and Larry Gonzales (R-Round Rock) will host a fundraiser at the W hotel in Austin.
Special guests at the event will include retired NFL quarterback Jeff Blake, former Longhorn baseball player and World Series champion Greg Swindell, and retired San Antonio Spurs forward Bruce Bowen. Austin-based designer Mr. Ross Bennett created unique purple bowties for the event, which signify the bipartisan mixing of red and blue.
Funds raised by the event will benefit Maggie's Hope, an organization which provides financial assistance to families of children with autism and Down syndrome.
