FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 20, 2007
It is time again to celebrate with families and friends the Thanksgiving holiday. The spirit of giving of our time and sharing of our resources is always evident during the holiday season.
I am grateful for my family, my health, my public service career and my faith. As always, I encourage volunteerism and generosity for the many around us who have so little. Since November is also Adoption Month, I again encourage South Texans to open their hearts to children who desperately need homes.
In Texas, over 6,000 abused and neglected children are awaiting adoption, and more than a third of them are over the age of nine. Sadly, the older children are more difficult to place.
For those of us who can add one more to our Thanksgiving table, whether it be for the day or a lifetime, our lives will be richer.
Let's remember the words of writer W. T. Purkiser, "Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure of our thanksgiving."
Thank you to the countless volunteers who make holidays more comfortable and memorable. The hugely attended Annual Feasts of Sharing sponsored by H-E-B are a classic example of tremendous generosity and community spirit. I commend the management and staffs of our H-E-Bs for sharing nourishment and extending cheer to so many every year.
My family and I extend our prayers and good wishes on Thanksgiving Day to the people of District 27!
