Sen. Lucio lauds decision to fund Irma Rangel School of Pharmacy

AUSTIN, TX -- Today Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr. (D-Brownsville) expressed his appreciation for the continued efforts of those involved in agreeing to fund the Texas A&M Irma Rangel School of Pharmacy the $5 million it needs to open its doors to students this fall.

"It has been a tremendous challenge during these times of budget constraints to secure the necessary funding to operate the Irma Rangel School of Pharmacy, but our vision, championed by the late Representative Irma Rangel, for the first professional school in South Texas has been recognized.

I am grateful to Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, House Speaker Tom Craddick, and Representative Jim Pitts, chair of the House Appropriations Committee, for their leadership in working with the Texas A&M System to approve the necessary funding in time for fall classes. I am especially thankful for Chairman Pitts' statesmanship and determination on this important South Texas issue.

The South Texas Delegation and I look forward to working with Chairman Pitts and Speaker Craddick in order to build on this first critical step in addressing the health care education needs of the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The upcoming and timely visit by Speaker Craddick to the Valley will allow us to showcase first-hand the higher education needs and demands of our region."

As always, if you have any input or questions regarding these or other matters, please do not hesitate to contact Doris Sanchez, my press secretary, 512-463-0385.
