FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 30, 2003
AUSTIN, TX - Today Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst appointed Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr. to a Joint Interim Committee on Public School Finance, created to find an improved system to fund public schools.
As a legislator and a former public school teacher, I am elated that I will be on a committee addressing public school finance, said Sen. Lucio. I look forward to trying to develop an equitable method of financing our school system, while at the same time finding alternate sources to the current property tax system, which is overburdening.
One of my greatest concerns is the inability of our citizens to achieve the American Dream of home ownership because they cant afford the property taxes, he stated. I, for one, want to ensure that Texans are not taxed any more than they can afford, while we look at every funding option to provide the necessary funds to school districts to ensure a sound education for every child. We have our work cut out for us.
Sen. Lucio indicated that in case a public hearing is held before he returns to Texas, he would make certain that it is closely monitored, or he will arrange to be in attendance via teleconference.
I want to thank the Lieutenant Governor for including Sen. Leticia Van de Putte and me on this committee and giving South Texas a voice in public school finance, especially since I have some of the poorest school districts in the state, he stated. This appointment shows that after this redistricting issue is resolved, the Texas Senate will resume working together in a bipartisan nature, as in the past.
