AUSTIN, TX--State Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr., D-Brownsville, will hold a press conference on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. in the Lieutenant Governor Reception Room on the second floor of the Capitol to offer an update on the status of the Queen Isabella Causeway that was damaged last week after a group of barges crashed into it resulting in the loss of lives and the temporary closure of the bridge.
Heavily impacted is South Padre Island, dependent on the bridge as the sole route to and from the mainland. The loss of revenues for businesses and jobs for residents from the Cameron County area will also be examined.
Invited to the press conference are Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. Bill Ratliff, House Speaker Pete Laney, state Representatives Jim Solis, D-Harlingen and Rene Oliveira, D-Brownsville, Attorney General John Cornyn, Comptroller Carole Keeton Rylander, Secretary of State Henry Cuellar, South Padre Island Mayor Ed Cyganiewicz, Port Isabel Mayor Patrick Marchan, Cameron County Judge Gilberto Hinojosa, and Hidalgo County Judge Eloy Pulido. If not able to attend, these officials may send a representative in their stead.
The Texas Department of Transportation will also give a presentation on the reconstruction of the bridge. Representatives of state agencies involved in the process of rebuilding both the bridge and the economy of South Padre Island will be available to answer questions.
