Chairman of Border Affairs Lauds Selection of the Next Texas Secretary of State

Austin, Texas - The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Border Affairs, Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr., (D-Brownsville) today praised the selection of State Representative Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo) as the next Texas Secretary of State.

"I am elated to know that my good friend, the Honorable Henry Cuellar, was chosen by Governor Rick Perry as Texas' next Secretary of State. I have known Representative Cuellar ever since we were both freshman members and roommates in the Texas House of Representatives in 1986. I can personally attest that he is a true statesman with a keen understanding of the Texas Border region."

Representative Cuellar will be replacing the current Secretary of State, the Honorable Elton Bomer.

"Secretary Bomer has personally left a lasting legacy of effectiveness that has never been seen before in the Office of Secretary of State. I daresay that Secretary Bomer has done more for the Border region than all of the previous Secretaries. He is truly a giant among men when it comes to helping the Border."

"Although Representative Cuellar has some big shoes to fill, I am convinced that his willingness to do what is right will help define and develop a new legacy of compassion and leadership in the Secretary's office. The state of Texas will be well served by this native Laredoan."

Chairman Lucio and Representative Cuellar have a long history of working together on key legislative initiatives. Representative Cuellar was the House sponsor of Senator Lucio's Colonia Omnibus Bill, Senate Bill 1421, which established the Colonia Coordinator position held by the Secretary of State, as well as the Colonia Ombudsman program.
