AUSTIN – State Senator Donna Campbell, Chair of the Veteran Affairs and Border Security Committee, released the following statement regarding President Trump's decision to deploy Texas National Guard personnel and resources to Texas' southern border.
"A secure border is essential for the safety of Texans and the sovereignty of our nation," Senator Campbell said. "Texas is on the front line of defense and we must do everything we can to end lawlessness and stop illegal drug and human trafficking from infiltrating our state. I applaud President Trump's commitment and the Governor's actions to maintain a secure border."
As of yesterday afternoon, more than 400 Texas National Guard personnel under the command of the governor were mobilized along the Texas border to provide surveillance and ground reconnaissance. In support, three UH-72 Lakota Helicopters have been stationed at the Laredo, McAllen, and Uvalde airports, respectively.
Under Title 32, all funding for the increased troop presence will be provided by the federal government. The federal government will also take over funding for 100 troops already stationed along the border. Meanwhile, the state will continue its $800 million commitment to border security passed in the last legislative budget.
"The brave men and women of the Texas National Guard have always served our state and nation proudly. From Hurricane Harvey to patrolling the border, I have no doubt they stand ready to answer the call."
