Senator Zaffirini Recognizes Caldwell County Day at State Capitol

(AUSTIN) — The Texas Senate today (Tuesday) welcomed a delegation from Caldwell County and passed a resolution by Senator Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo, designating May 7, 2013, as Caldwell County Day at the State Capitol.

The Caldwell County delegation comprised more than 30 local leaders, including County Judge Tom Bonn and County Commissioners Alfredo Muñoz, Fred Buchholtz, Ernesto "Neto" Madrigal and Joe Roland.

In her remarks on the floor of the Texas Senate, Senator Zaffirini paid tribute to Caldwell County's rapid economic growth as well as its outdoor recreation opportunities and unique annual celebrations.

"I am delighted to welcome constituents from Caldwell County to the Texas Capitol," Senator Zaffirini said. "Their visit is a wonderful opportunity not only to promote economic development and tourism, but also to advocate for local legislative and funding priorities."

During their visit to the Capitol Monday, Caldwell County leaders discussed with legislators and staff their priority issues, including economic development and transportation.

When the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) lowered from 65 to 55 mph the speed limit on the Caldwell County portion of U.S. Highway 83 in 2012, Senator Zaffirini championed the needs of Caldwell County residents. She wrote a letter to TxDOT Chair Ted Houghton and met with agency officials, explaining the negative impact that lowering the speed limit had on the county. TxDOT subsequently reversed its decision, returning the speed limit to 65 mph.
