Senator Zaffirini Announces Funding for Live Oak County Airport

(AUSTIN) — Senator Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo, announced today (Wednesday) that the Live Oak County Airport will receive approximately $120,000 from the Texas Department of Transportation's (TxDOT) Aviation Facilities Grant Program.

The funds will help the airport proceed with planned improvements, including construction of a game fence that will help keep wildlife off the runway.

"Deer and other animals that wander on to the runway can pose a serious danger for aircraft," Senator Zaffirini said. "Construction of a deer-proof fence will prevent property damage and help ensure the safety of aircraft and passengers arriving at or departing from the Live Oak County Airport."

An air hub for deer hunters from across the United States, the Live Oak County Airport facilitates approximately 1,200 landings and takeoffs annually. That number is expected to rise as the county experiences increased economic activity due to the Eagle Ford Shale.

"Community airports such as Live Oak County's account for more than 3 million flight hours per year," Senator Zaffirini said. "What's more, they provide critical aviation facilities and services for agricultural, medical, business and commuter purposes."

Project costs will be funded 90 percent by the TxDOT Aviation Facilities Grant Program and 10 percent by Live Oak County.
