ZAFFIRINI ANNOUNCES CALL FOR TRANSPORTATION GRANTS

The Texas Department of Transportation is accepting applications for Statewide Transportation Enhancement Program grants, Sen. Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo, announced today (Jan. 16). The grants are for non-traditional transportation projects such as bicycle and pedestrian facilities, landscaping and scenic beautification, historical preservation and environmental mitigation.

"These are unique projects that go above and beyond standard transportation activities," Sen. Zaffirini said. "They result from the ideas and inspirations of persons who want to improve the quality of our environment and the aesthetics of our roadways."

Last year the Transportation Commission awarded nearly $130 million for 135 transportation enhancement projects throughout the state. Projects received reimbursement for up to 80 percent of costs for planning and design, property acquisition and construction. The deadline for submitting 2001 projects is Monday, June 18.

Nomination forms and instructions are available from the local TxDOT district office, which will host workshops to discuss program information and offer assistance in completing the form. Projects must be nominated by a public authority, such as a city or county, and may be administered by TxDOT.

"My goals include ensuring that Senate District 21 receives its fair share of these grants," Sen. Zaffirini emphasized. "My strong hope is that many SD 21 governmental entities will apply for and receive project funding."
