Texas Legislature Passes SB 1837 for the City of Alice to Upgrade Existing Sports Facilities or Fields

AUSTIN, TX – On Saturday, the Texas House passed Senate Bill 1837 authored by Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa and sponsored by Representative J.M. Lozano sending it to the Governor's desk with overwhelming approval from the Texas Legislature. SB 1837 authorizes the City of Alice to use municipal hotel occupancy tax revenue to promote tourism by enhancing and upgrading existing sports facilities or fields.

“I am glad that SB 1837 is on its way to Governor Abbott to become law. This is a priority bill for the City of Alice to give them a financial tool to enhance and upgrade their sports facilities and fields which will help them promote and increase tourism in the city,” said Senator Hinojosa. He added, “I appreciate Chairman J.M. Lozano sponsoring this bill in the Texas House and moving it quickly to ensure its passage. I also appreciate the Alice City Council and staff for bringing this important issue to our attention and for working with us through the legislative process.”

Representative J.M. Lozano, who had the companion legislation, H.B 3598 in the House, reiterated the importance of the legislation. He said, “I am proud to have grown up in Jim Wells County and even prouder to be their Representative at the Capitol. This bill will help the Hub City host regional sporting events and let even more Texans get to know the hospitality and beauty of Alice, Texas.”

The City of Alice passed a resolution in support of this legislation on March 6, 2023. The resolution expressed the need for this change in law and its importance given that the use of these funds will allow the City to host more events and increase the number of visitors staying in hotels. This would also help increase revenue to other supporting area businesses.

SB 1837, if approved by Governor Abbott will take effect on September 1, 2023.
