Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa Sworn in as President Pro Tempore as the 84th Legislative Session Begins

AUSTIN, TX — Today Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa was sworn in as President Pro Tempore as the 84th Legislative Session officially began. Senator Hinojosa was nominated by his Senate colleagues. Senators Judith Zaffirini, Jane Nelson, Kevin Eltife, John Whitmire, and Carlos Uresti spoke in support of Senator Hinojosa and highlighted his personal and professional accomplishments. Senator Hinojosa then delivered an acceptance speech after he was unanimously elected President Pro Tem.

"It is an honor to be the President Prop Tem this session and is an exciting experience. Working together with my Senate colleagues is a privilege as we work to address the critical issues facing our state. Our objective is to work towards making Texas a better place to live for all our families," stated Senator Hinojosa.

According to the Senate Rules, at the beginning of each Legislative Session, the Senate shall elect one of its members President Pro Tempore who shall serve as the Presiding Officer of the Senate in case of the Lt. Governor's absence or disability.

Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa proudly represents the counties of Nueces, Jim Wells, Brooks, and Hidalgo (part). Senator Hinojosa serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Intergovernmental Relations, Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, and is a member of the Senate Committees on Natural Resources; Criminal Justice; Agriculture, Rural Affairs and Homeland Security as well as the Legislative Budget Board (LBB) and the Sunset Advisory Commission.
