AUSTIN – Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, today held her first Senate Finance Committee hearing as chair. The committee heard a presentation from the Texas Legislative Budget Board (LBB) and discussed the state of the Texas economy, including the budget process, methods of finance, spending limits and the Economic Stabilization Fund.
"It was an honor to chair our first Senate Finance Committee interim hearing today and to discuss the state of our economy as well as our current border security efforts," said Senator Nelson. "Our committee will work to keep Texas strong and successful and follow the policies of fiscal discipline that have led to the Texas miracle."
In addition to addressing the general state of the Texas economy, the LBB also discussed current border security efforts and their funding. The LBB estimates that Operation Strong Safety, led by the Texas Department of Public Safety with support from the National Guard, will cost approximately $17-18 million a month. They also estimated additional costs due to unaccompanied minors entering and remaining in Texas. A copy of the presentation can be found online.
"Even though this is a federal responsibility, Texas taxpayers bear the costs of an unsecure border. Therefore we must take action on the state level to address the ongoing crisis," said Senator Nelson.
