Senator Nelson Statement on Sunset Commission Staff Recommendation Reports

AUSTIN - Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, issued the following statement today regarding the release of Sunset Commission staff recommendations for five of the 21 agencies up for review:

"The Sunset staff findings are on point, and their ideas for policy changes have merit. Each of these recommendations will be carefully considered, and the public will have ample opportunity to weigh in on these ideas in the weeks ahead, " Senator Nelson said.

At their website, the Sunset Commission has posted its recommendations for the University Interscholastic League (UIL) and four health and human service agencies: the Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS), the Department of State Health Services (DSHS), the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS), and the Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS).

As part of the Sunset process, the Sunset Commission staff make recommendations on whether each agency should continue and, if so, what structural and statutory changes should be made to ensure they are meeting their purpose efficiently and effectively. The Sunset Advisory Commission, chaired by Senator Nelson, will hold hearings on the reports June 24-25.

The Sunset Advisory Commission -- a panel of five Senators, five State Representatives and two public members -- will vote on whether to accept, reject or modify the staff recommendations at a decision hearing in August. Those decisions will result in legislation to be filed in the next legislative session, and the Legislature will have the final say on the future of each agency.

There are 16 agencies yet to receive staff recommendations, including the Health and Human Services Commission, the State Office of Administrative Hearings and the Texas Workforce Commission.

SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Denton and Tarrant counties. She is chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee and the highest ranking Republican in the Texas Senate.
