AUSTIN — Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, was named a "Friend of the Texas A&M University System". The award, which was presented to Senator Nelson at Tarleton State University, recognizes Senator Nelson for her work during the 83rd legislative session on higher education.

"The Texas A&M System has contributed so much to Texas. It provides our economy with a highly skilled work force. It has brought to our state some of the best and brightest minds in research, agriculture and engineering. But most of all, it has helped hundreds of thousands of students achieve their dreams," said Senator Nelson. "As a former teacher, that's what it is all about in my mind -- helping our students succeed."

"Through our shared commitment to the future of Texas, The Texas A&M University System and our state legislators are leading the way for quality higher education across our nation," said Tarleton President F. Dominic Dottavio. "It is a pleasure to work with dedicated public servants such as Senator Nelson, and I commend her efforts during the 83rd legislative session."

Senator Nelson has recently received several awards for her work, including the Champion for Free Enterprise Award from the Texas Association of Business; the Courageous Conservative Award from the Texas Conservative Coalition; the 2013 Women's Health Hero Award from the Texas Women's Health Coalition; the Texas Champion for Children Award from Texas CASA; the Patient Protection Award from the Texas Medical Association; the Physicians Patient Advocacy Award from Texas Academy of Family Physicians; Senate Legislator of the Year from Texas Nurse Practitioners; and the Courageous Defender of Life Award from Texas Alliance for Life.

SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Denton and Tarrant counties. She is chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee and the highest ranking Republican in the Texas Senate.
