AUSTIN — The Texas Sunset Advisory Commission, led by Commission Chair and Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, held its organizational hearing today, marking the official start to the sunset review cycle for 21 state agencies, boards and commissions that will "sunset" in 2015 unless the Legislature decides to continue them.
"The Sunset process in Texas is a unique and important part of our state government. It allows both the agencies and legislators to take a look in the mirror and reflect on what we are doing well and what we can do better," said Senator Nelson. "Each of the 21 agencies up for review this year serve important functions for our state, and I am looking forward to discussing how we can best continue those functions in the future."
The 21 agencies up for review during the 2014-2015 Sunset cycle include the: Health and Human Services Commission; Department of Aging and Disability Services; Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services; Department of Family and Protective Services; Department of State Health Services; Texas Workforce Commission; and the State Office of Administrative Hearings. A listing of all the agencies scheduled for review can be found at: www.sunset.state.tx.us.
This is Senator Nelson's second time to serve as Chair of the Sunset Advisory Commission, making her the only person to be appointed Chair twice since the Commission was created in 1977.
