AUSTIN — Texas State Senator Jane Nelson received the Texas Women's Healthcare Coalition "Women's Health Hero" award today to honor her substantial efforts promoting women's healthcare during the 83rd Legislative Session.
"After working hard this session to ensure that Texas women will continue to have access to care, I am very proud to receive this award," said Senator Nelson. "The Legislature came together to ensure we meet our needs for women's health, and we were able to add $100 million to the budget for services. I believe in the power of prevention for Texas women and know the work we did this year will have a real impact."
"The Texas Women's Healthcare Coalition is immensely grateful to Senator Nelson for her leadership for women's preventive care," said Dr. Janet Realini, Chair of the Coalition. "Her support for family planning helped ensure increased funding, which translates into better health for Texas women and babies -- and lower tax costs for our state."
As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, the chair of the Article II workgroup, and the lead negotiator for Article II on the SB 1 Conference Committee, Senator Nelson played a large role in increasing funding for women's health this session. Under her leadership, the budget currently includes more than $100 million above the base budget for women's health.
