AUSTIN —The Senate Criminal Justice Committee today unanimously approved SB 743 by Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, to better protect victims of domestic violence and other Texans from individuals who continually violate protective orders.
"Repeated protective order violations indicate a heightened danger to the victim," said Senator Nelson. "This bill give our prosecutors the tools they need to protect and potentially save the lives of abuse victims."
SB 743 creates a new offense for continuous violations of a protective order, allowing that offenders can be prosecuted for a 3rd degree felony for two or more violations within a 12-month period while the first violation is still pending in court. The bill now goes to the full Senate for consideration.
