AUSTIN — Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, filed legislation today to better protect victims of domestic violence. To date, Senator Nelson has filed 48 bills ahead of the March 8th filing deadline.
Continuous Violation of a Protection Order: SB 743 creates an offense for continuous violation of a protective order. Offenders who violate a protective order two or more times in a 12-month-period while the first violation is still pending in court would be subject to a third-degree felony under the bill. "If an offender repeatedly violates a protective order, that indicates a heightened danger to the victim. This bill give our prosecutors the tools they need to protect and potentially save the lives of abuse victims."
Child Victims Support: SB 744 allows dependent child victims of crime to qualify for benefits under the Crime Victims Compensation (CVC) Fund. "The temporary assistance we provide for crime victims should also be available to help child victims escape dangerous situations."
Legislators may continue to file bills until the bill filing deadline on March 8, 2013. To search legislation, visit the Texas Legislature online at www.capitol.state.tx.us.
