AUSTIN -- Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, has filed legislation aimed at protecting service men and women on active duty from possible penalties in their lease agreements.
"When an individual is called up for active duty, they should have the flexibility to change their home base without penalty. Whether they want to move their belongings in with relatives or simply find less expensive housing, these people are putting their lives in jeopardy to defend our nation. We should help them take care of their affairs at home, and this legislation represents a simple way we can assist," Senator Nelson said.
SB 1186 provides the right to vacate a lease without penalty to service members and their dependants in the event of a deployment or re-assignment. A written copy of the orders is required, along with 30 days written notice to landlords.
The Legislature is currently in session through May 30, 2005. The last day to file bills is Friday, March 11th.
