AUSTIN -- The Senate Committee on Intergovernmental Relations today approved SB 511 by Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, designed to preserve the scenic beauty of Texas roadways and make the state eligible for federal highway beautification dollars.
Specifically, SB 511:
- Enrolls Texas in the National Scenic Byways program. Currently Texas and Montana are the only states that have not chosen to make themselves eligible for these federal dollars.
- Directs the Texas Department of Transportation to develop a system for Texas roadways to apply for federal Scenic Byways grants for beautification and tourist markers.
- Allows communities to seek approval from TxDOT to designate certain stretches of state highways as scenic.
"I want our children to be able to grow up and enjoy the scenic drives of our beautiful state with their children. Enrolling in this national program will help us leverage federal dollars to beautify our state highways. Let's preserve the view along our roadways for future generations of Texans," Senator Nelson said.
SB 511 now moves to the full Senate for consideration. The Legislature will consider legislation until June 2. For information on legislative action, visit www.capitol.state.tx.us.
