Salvage and dumping became rou- tine for a succession of these com- panies. A battery wrecking plant, a secondary lead smelter, as well as a rolling mill and manufacturing faci- lity for lead pipe, shielding, and shot were all operated at the site.

Lead was released along with cad- mium, mercury, copper, zinc, arsen- ic and other metals into the atmos- phere from a smokestack that oper- ated primarily during the evening hours. In addition, tons of lead slag and battery chips were deposited in the adjacent neighborhoods.
