Other lagoons resulted from the exca- vation of burrow pits for sand and gra- vel. At least six companies mined the flood plain in West Dallas since the 1910s. They included Oak Cliff Sand & Gravel, Strongās Gravel, Vilbig Bro- thers, Murff Brothers, West Dallas Gravel & Sand, and Trinity Gravel & Construction Co.ās.
Abandoned burrow pits filled with ground and rain water, and were often contaminated by raw sewage from privies, as well as petroleum and petroleum by-products from local in- dustrial facilities.
