Other pollutants included coal and coal dust that accumulat- ed on and around the tracks. These were by-products of the locomotive fuel that was in use from the late 19th century through the 4th decade of the 20th century.
Diesel fueled locomotives were introduced in the late 1940s and diesel spills replaced coal and coal dust as the companyâs fuel-rela- ted source of pollution.
