Mining in West Dallas was not confined to the flood plain but also occurred on the bluffs that rose to form north Oak Cliff. The discovery of the necessary components for Portland Ce- ment--limestone and shale-- along with the frequent building booms in nearby Dallas were responsible for the establish- ment of West Dallasā two larg- est employers--Lone Star Ce- ment and Trinity Portland Ce- ment Companies.
